Sign Size Guide

Choosing the Right Size for your Safety Sign

The size of a safety sign can have a significant impact on how easily it can be seen and understood. A sign needs to be large enough to be clearly noticed and understood in the environment where it is being used, while still being practical for the available space.

The best size for your sign will depend on how far away it needs to be visible from, where it will be positioned, the amount of information it contains and the environment in which it will be used.

At CSS Signs, we offer safety signs in a range of standard sizes to suit different workplaces, environments and viewing distances. This guide will help you choose a suitable sign size for your needs.

What Size Do I Need?

There is no single sign size that is suitable for every situation. A sign positioned beside a door or piece of equipment may only need to be small, while a sign intended to be seen across a large warehouse, factory or construction site will need to be considerably larger.

When choosing a sign size, consider:

  • Viewing distance – How far away will people be from where the sign is located? Generally, the further the viewing distance, the bigger the sign will need to be.
  • Location - Where will the sign be installed? A sign placed beside a door or piece of equipment will have different size requirements than a sign at a construction site entrance or car park.
  • Sign content – How much information is on the sign? Signs with a large amount of text may need to be bigger to ensure the content is legible.
  • Surrounding environment – How busy is the surrounding area? A smaller size sign may suffice in a quiet office or corridor, whereas larger signs are required in busy environments such as factories, construction sites and public areas to ensure visibility.
  • Viewing Height - How high will the sign will be installed? For signs installed at height, or in large open spaces, a larger size may help improve visibility.

As a general rule, if you are unsure between two sizes, choosing the larger size will usually make the sign easier to see from a greater distance.

Our Size Range

We offer safety signs in a range of sizes to suit different applications.

Small signs are useful where the viewer will be standing close to the sign.

Typical applications include:

  • Equipment and machinery
  • Doors and access points
  • Control panels
  • PPE reminders positioned directly beside equipment

Small signs can be a practical choice when space is limited and the message needs to be communicated to people who are already close to the sign.

Medium-sized signs are a versatile choice for many workplace applications.

They can be used on doors, walls, fences, machinery and work areas where the sign needs to be clearly visible without taking up a large amount of space.

These sizes are commonly suitable for:

  • Mandatory PPE signs
  • Prohibition signs
  • Hazard warning signs
  • Fire safety signs
  • Emergency and safe condition signs

For many indoor workplace applications, a medium-sized sign can provide a good balance between visibility and practicality.

Larger signs provide increased visibility where people need to identify the sign from further away.

They can be particularly useful in construction sites, warehouses, factories, car parks, construction sites and larger commercial premises.

Consider a larger size where:

  • The sign needs to be visible to observers from a distance
  • The sign is being installed in a loud, busy environment
  • There are vehicles, buildings or activity that could obstruct the sign
  • The sign is installed at a height, e.g. on the side of a building or on scaffolding
  • The sign contains a large amount of text and symbols which need to be clear and legible

Which Size Should I Choose?

Choose a smaller sign when the viewer will be close to it and the message is simple.

Choose a medium-sized sign for general workplace applications such as doors, walls, machinery and work areas.

Choose a larger sign when it needs to be visible from further away or for open areas, warehouses, construction sites and other locations where maximum visibility is important.
